when I first suggested to people that I will be using re-usable nappies I had the feedback of "gosh that’s such hard work what is the point?" well there are several points. Using reusable nappies helps to save me money for starters, save the environment and they truly aren’t hard work at all.
Gone are the days when you had to soak them in chemicals, scrub them to get stains out etc.
The truth is the washing machine does it all for you yes you do 3 more washes per week (with half the detergent) but that’s it, you can line dry your nappies, tumble them or put them on a radiator just as you do with items of clothes its so easy. Laundry costs (detergent, electricity, water, wear and tear of washer) of £120 over your baby’s nappy career.
Did you know that disposable nappies contain lots of chemicals, have you noticed that they never smell of urine? I really didn’t like the idea of my child sitting with chemicals next to his bottom.
You probably do not realise the amount of money you will spend from birth to potty on disposables. Let’s work out an average.
NHS Paediatricians suggest that newborns babies to 6 months should be changed 10-12 times a day and older babies around 6 times, ending with just one being used at night-time.
Lets suggest an average newborn to six month old baby will need changing about every 2-3 hours (probably more if breastfed) so lets say 10 nappies in 24 hrs, and a baby six months to two and a half years will need changing 6 times a day.
So that’s 70 nappies in a week, 1820 nappies in 6 months and a grand average total of 6188 nappies in two and a half years. Now the average branded nappies are approximately 17p each so birth to potty you would spend about £1052 and in reality it’s probably more if you buy the toilet training pants etc.
For 20 Lotties Botties nappies size 1 and 20 size 2 and 5 size 1 wraps and 5 size 2 wraps you are looking to spend around £250 so that’s birth to potty. What a massive saving!
